See you real "Toon" at Mickey and Minnie's Runaway Railway!

On January 27th, Mickey and Minnie's Runaway Railway opened to guests at the Disneyland Resort! The ElCapiTOON is hosting a prem-ear of "Perfect Picnic" in the heart of Mickey's Toontown and you're invited. I had the pleasure of working on this project for two years through the construction phase all the way to our opening day.
The ElCapiTOON’s streamline-moderne style with a Toontown twist is prevalent in the interior, where curved walls and bright colors greet guests as they enter the theater lobby. An emphasis on horizontal lines pulls the guests through the space, while the metallic trims and finishes add to the grandeur of the movie premiere event.
As guests move through queue, they are treated to a display of exhibits set up by the ToonTown Hysterical Society, showcasing different “Ear-as” of Mickey Mouse shorts, all while walking on a red carpet of course! Various platforms display iconic props- from the ship’s wheel in Steamboat Willie to Mickey’s costumes in “The Prince and the Pauper”. If you look closely, the queue is filled with fun movie details like film reels and film strips… and you might even notice some familiar faces in the popcorn display at the concession stand!
While making their way to the theater, the ceiling progressively lowers and the colors darken, building anticipation before guests walk through the iconic button-tufted doors to see “Perfect Picnic”. A beautiful mural fills the preshow, with a dazzling Art Deco chandelier overhead.
After going on an adventure on the Runaway Railway, guests walk back through the screen that they entered the train barn through, and into the merchandise shop. EngineEar Souvenirs continues the same architectural style of the theater lobby but in a model train shop. Whimsical elements can be found in every corner, like the train track details in the floor and cabinetry.
